An art dealer can be compared to marketing and management workers who are trained and skilled with a certain work, filled with willingness, patience, and determination for working with colors and art. Getting a painting sold is not as easy as it used to be. It’s very expensive, because you will be paying both the art and the one who made it.
If you graduated with a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or doctor’s degree in any field that involves art, is knowledgeable about how to run businesses, have good sense of communication, is good in writing, know more than one language, determined to create masterpieces, and have experiences in gallery work, it is best to consider this profession.
Normally, art dealers were once mentored by established ones before their time, where they learned how to make deals, make more money, and satisfy their customers with their work. Aside from skills, these professionals must be aware of the various genres of art, how the market works, the value of money for old and new artists, be involved in current matters, and obtain contacts with their co-dealers for achievements and transactions. Salary must not be a problem because it takes long to settle to a profession even with a degree.
Once the artist is established with the profession he/she chose, the artist must focus on a specific genre. In order to be well-known, the art dealer must be present in parties in order to be seen, also in public auctions, and art faire openings to gain more trust from people and attain more customers. Art dealers usually prepare money in the bank for their business so that they won’t end up being poor. One reason why they do this is because the profession is unpredictable and the market may sometimes be unstable with long working hours.
Being in the profession of an art dealer also has drawbacks. Sometimes, you may now be able to convince people to invest in your work or because a deal may get crooked. More things are still at stake, so when things like this happen, at dealers must be prepared of what to resort to. It will be a success though, for people who are determined to the profession and for those who love their jobs.
